Long Beach Island is a barrier island off the coast of New Jersey. It is 18 miles long and about half a mile wide. In 1609, the first European explorer to visit the region, Henry Hudson, sailed up the river that now bears his name. The Dutch soon settled in the area, and in 1664, they took control of the colony from the English. The Dutch named the island “Longa Eylandt,” which means “long island.”
